Weight Loss Mind Power
If you want to lose weight and keep it off, your brain could be your biggest weapon.
Within two years of losing weight, most people regain the kilos they shed. But some manage to get fit and stay that way. What’s their secret? According to new research, it may well be their brains.
A 12-year study at Brown University and the University of Colorado in the US has found that sustained weight loss is linked to the part of the brain that processes information. And the people they found who succeeded long term were methodical, disciplined and always had a plan.
While some people may naturally have the right mindset for weight loss, anyone can learn how to use their brain to achieve their goals. Here are some pointers:
Think positive and stay motivated
People who maintain their weight loss turn negatives into positive motivation. Rather than dwelling on ‘missing out,’ they focus on how good refusing temptation will feel.
Do it for yourself
If you want to harness your mind power, you have to be losing weight for the right reasons. If you are doing it to please someone else, it won’t work. Ask yourself: What has got you to the point you are at now? Why do you really want to lose weight? Is that reason strong enough to help you succeed?
Choose the right time
Don’t start a weight loss program when you’re stressed, moving house, changing jobs or going through a relationship break-up; it’s not an ideal time to change your lifestyle.
Ask for help

Keep it off
Losing weight is only half the battle – keeping it off is the next challenge. By combining strength training with your weight loss, you will decrease fat without losing muscle. Increased muscle also increases your metabolism – and that means more kilojoules burned just through daily living.
